Drill Sergeant John Lilley, from the 1st Battalion Scots Guards, inspects the Guard at Stirling Castle which was manned at the weekend to mark the official birthday of Her Majesty The Queen. Gunners from 105th Regiment Royal Artillery (Volunteers) also fired two 21-gun royal salutes at both Stirling and Edinburgh Castles at midday on Saturday 15 June. Members of 23 Engineer Regiment (Air Assault) were greeted by cheering crowds as they paraded through Woodbridge last week. Some 180 soldiers 'with swords drawn, bayonets fixed, drums beating, bands playing and colours flying' exercised their freedom of the town, with music from the Band of the Parachute Regiment. The Wildcat, the Royal Navy's next-generation helicopter, is undergoing a crucial workout off the south coast of England. Test pilots, specialist engineers and technicians have already carried out trials at sea and noted the helicopter's flight characteristics to enable them to set the limits for it to be safely operated at sea. The lessons being learned will help the Fleet Air Arm devise the training courses for the Wildcat aircrews of tomorrow. [Picture: Crown copyright]

Over 2,000 troops and 750 vehicles from 20th Armoured Brigade have been preparing for the scenarios likely to be faced in future conflicts. Exercise Bavarian Charger in Germany is the first of 3 large exercises being undertaken by the brigade this summer, and is designed to prepare personnel for contingency operations post-Afghanistan. Staff and officer cadets from the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth joined with veterans (pictured) and the local community at the town's D-Day memorial yesterday, 6 June, to commemorate the 69th anniversary of the D-Day landings. Dartmouth was a major advanced amphibious base for American troops and ships preparing for the Normandy landings and the college itself was a centre for combined operations in the run-up to D-Day.
